RYA Start Yachting Course
Are you interested in learning how to sail?
The Derwent Sailing Squadron (DSS) runs a two-day introduction to sailing course for complete beginners. By the end of the course, you will have gained experience in steering a yacht, sail handling, rope-work and be aware of safety on board.
Holders of the Start Yachting certificate can go on to complete the Competent Crew course in a reduced time of an additional three days.
The cost is $420 per person.
This course assumes that you have no prior knowledge of sailing.
This course covers basics of the yacht, rope-work, getting underway, rules of the road, man overboard recovery, clothing and equipment, emergency equipment and precautions, and meteorology.
To gain the RYA Start Yachting certificate requires attending a 2-day course, which is normally run over a weekend. This course can also be run on demand for groups of 3-4 students on weekdays and weekends.
WHAT TO BRING
You will need to bring warm clothing, thermals, spray jacket, nonmarking shoes, sailing gloves, hat, beanie and sunblock. An inflatable PFD yoke and harness is provided.
