All too often Marine Rescue services are called out to attend to engine breakdowns, and in many cases these could have been avoided if the skippers had carried out some routine maintenance or simple trouble- shooting.
The aim of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Diesel Engine course is to prevent machinery breakdown at sea. If you do have mechanical problems this course will teach you how to get going again. As a crew member on a racing or cruising sailboat this course will extend your maritime skills and enhance your value as a crew member.
The cost is $195 per person.
This course assumes that you have no prior knowledge of sailing but some practical experience is desirable.
This course will cover principles of diesel engine operation, systems and parts of the engine, fault finding, rectification of common problems, bleeding the fuel system, changing the impeller, routine maintenance and winter layup procedures.
To gain the RYA Marine Diesel certificate requires attending a 6 hour course held over 2 nights of 3 hours.
Your instructor will provide all learning support material and resources. It is advisable to bring old clothing as you will be hands on a diesel motor and parts.
The RYA Diesel Engine Handbook is also available for purchase for $30 from the DSS Office, and is an optional resource for this course.
