RYA Day Skipper Practical

Get the skills and knowledge to take charge of a small yacht, in familiar waters, by day!

The RYA Day Skipper certificate is the first ‘skipper level’ qualification in the RYA training scheme. RYA Day Skipper certificate holders are entitled to an International Certificate of Competency (ICC) which is generally required for a yacht charter in Europe.

If you are a novice sailor who would like to become an active crew member and work towards the RYA Day Skipper certification, then we would welcome you to join this course to complete the RYA Competent Crew Certificate.

The Course

You will develop your yacht handling and seamanship skills and improve your knowledge of pilotage and navigation with expert guidance from our friendly instructor.

By the end of the course, you will have the skills and technical knowledge to skipper a small sailing yacht with confidence. We plan the itinerary on the first day to take the best advantage of the weather.

You will sail around the River Derwent, and sometimes south towards the scenic D’Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

To achieve the RYA Day Skipper Practical Certificate, you should have completed your Competent Crew or be at a similar level with previous experience of crewing onboard. We strongly recommend completing the Day Skipper Theory Course or the DSS Inshore and Coastal Navigation Course at the Derwent Sailing Squadron, which services as preparation for the RYA Day Skipper course. Minimum age of 16 years applies.

THE YACHT AND INSTRUCTOR

This course will be run onboard our RYA accredited yacht, "Shorty" by an accredited RYA Instructor. Our Young 88 designed yacht, at 8.8m long, is a popular multipurpose boat with agility for sailing and comfort for cruising.
