THE LIGHTKEEPER ART EXPO

March 7 - April 16

About the Artist
A sign-writer and artist by trade, Allen Leving’s nautical career began in the 50’s as cook on the steam tug Wybie, then operating out of Port Albert.  After a stint as relief lightkeeper at Wilson’s Promontory he lost his heart to the lights and, following his marriage to Marlene in the late 60’s, they left to forge a new life as keeper & wife on Tasmania’s remote light stations.  For the next twenty years Allen and Marlene lived and raised their family in some of the wildest and most inaccessible places in Australia (as detailed in Marlene’s memoir Living With Jezebel).  Throughout his time on the lights, Allen painted and produced artworks that reflected his love and intimate understanding of the sea, the ships that sailed her and the quirks, perks and absurdities of a lightkeepers’ life.  This exhibition will showcase a selection of Allen’s work including paintings, sketches and models spanning the late ’60s through to the ’90s.
