he social calendar starts with the sailing season's Official Opening Day to mark the start of the new season each September.
Opening day is pretty special even for those not taking part. Simply relaxing and enjoying a drink as the yachts sail past makes for a memorable occasion.
Opening Day involves a mix of maritime tradition and socialising.
- The afternoon starts with an organised Sail Past the governor and salute by the skipper.
Craft taking part in the Sail Past range from Laser dinghies through to ocean racing yachts and large cruisers.
- Following the Sail Past, the majority of boats head to a predesignated safe anchorage off one of Hobart's beautiful beaches for a raft-up where Opening Day festivities continue well into the afternoon.
Opening day is a great way to enjoy camaraderie between boat crews and signals the official start of the season's on-water rivalries with all clubs taking part.
Hobart currently is home to 19 SB20s, the largest fleet in Australia, sailing on the picturesque and at times challenging river Derwent.
