The Taz Racing Team youth team of Will Sargent (19), Jacob McConaghy (18), Ed Reid (14) and Harry Gregory (12) have taken the SB20 Australian fleet by storm winning the Spring Bay Mill SB20 Australian Championship on Spring Bay in Triabunna.
(more…)Tasmanian sailor Brett Cooper (Aeolus) has taken a commanding ten-point lead in the SB20 Australian Championship, sailed from the Spring Bay Boat Club in Triabunna, with one more day of sailing to come. Consistency is key to success in one-design regattas and Cooper had this in spades on the second day of racing.
(more…)The big seas of Spring Bay are already coming under the spell of experienced SB20 sailor Nick Rogers (Karabos) in the Spring Bay Mill SB20 Australian Championship. The regatta started in hectic conditions with 19-22 knots of mostly consistent south easterly breeze causing a big swell on the Bay.
(more…)The NSW yacht Zen has been crowned overall winner of this years Harcourts Hobart King of the Derwent. The TP52 owned and skippered by Gordon Ketelbey sailed a perfect tactical race to finish 3rd over the line and win IRC on handicap. Zen has recently been acquired by Ketelbey after racing on the TP52 Super Series for many years and has undergone many modifications to make sure it is up to the challenge of offshore racing.
Today’s conditions, of a 15-20 knot sea breeze on the River Derwent, saw Phillip Turners yacht Alive Yachting take line honour’s to claim the Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc, City of Hobart Trophy. Purchased at the start of 2014 by Phillip Turner, a Tasmanian businessman, Alive has broken several long-standing race records and filled the trophy cabinet with east coast Australia races before heading to Southeast Asia mid 2016 for the Asian Series. She has now returned and looking forward to east coast Australia racing, after competing in this years Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Alive finished 2nd on IRC and the TP52 Quest owned by Bob Steel and Craig Neil were 3rd in the results.
Greg Prescott’s, modified Farr 40, 2Unlimited won AMS division and was 4th in IRC. Prescott will now be concentrating on tomorrow’s Australian Yachting Championships commencing in Hobart.
This years PHS was won by NSW yacht Veteran yacht Katwinchar. Bill Barry-Cotter’s Katwinchar was the oldest boat in 75th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet at 114 years of age, but also the oldest to have ever competed in the race. Built in 1904 by coopers at the Watney Brewery in London, Katwinchar won the Grand Veterans class. Katwinchar will also be competing in the Australian Yachting Championships.
Finally, the results for the Launceston to Hobart, Beauty Point to Low Head and King of the Derwent Series has been taken out by Tim Oldingg and his crew from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria boat Vertigo.

The River Derwent produced challenging conditions for the iWest/Nautilus Marine Tasmanian Yachting Championship which was sailed from the Derwent Sailing Squadron over the weekend.
The championship was sailed over two days, offering an opportunity for some of Tasmania’s offshore entrants in the Sydney, Melbourne, and Launceston to Hobart races a chance to finesse their crew work and boat handling before boat deliveries commence.
Race Officer Ian Ross provided outstanding race management in widely variable conditions which offered the fleet a taste of everything – from drifters to thunder squalls to fresh north-westerly winds. The fleet sailed six races in total which were a mix of windward/leeward races and short passage races, providing an excellent training opportunity.
In Division 1, Midnight Rambler (Ed Psaltis) won four races on IRC and, after dropping his worst result of a fourth, took out the division on 7 points. Whistler (Drew Latham) finished in second place on 10 points, with Filepro (Tim Gadsby) on 11 points. Jazz Player (John Dryden) took out Division 1 on PHS on 11 points from Filepro on 12 points and Midnight Rambler on 16 points.
In Division 2, the team on Young Lion (Scott Brain) put on a masterful display, coming first in every race on IRC, and won under PHS with Invincible (Finlay Crisp) coming second in both categories. Off-Piste (Paul Einoder) finished in third place in IRC while Jiyuu (Peter Davis) finished third in PHS.
The event was a thrilling prelude to the Australian Yachting Championship which will be sailed in Hobart for the first time from 3-5 January 2020 and will include several interstate entries.
