A near galeforce sou’-wester came roaring up the River Derwent at more than 30 knots this afternoon, playing havoc with the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant race, with a man overboard (MOB) situation, a dismasting and other gear damage that forced five yachts to retire.

Tasmania now has two boats in the fleet for the 74th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with Alive this week joining Black Sheep as entries for the Boxing Day ocean classic pass 70, including five 100-footers. A total of more than 50 Tasmanian yachts now have IRC certificates, near 30 for the first time, thanks to the combined efforts of Tasmanian IRC measurer Fred Barrett, Australian Sailing and the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) in the UK. (more…)
